For Emily Smith, pursuing a graduate degree in Modern Human Anatomy at the University of Colorado Anschutz meant long days, late nights, and a demanding schedule. In the middle of it all, she realized something was missing: time to take care of herself. She wanted to feel connected to her well-being again, starting with something simple and essential: food. “I wanted to increase my understanding, access to, and joy in making healthy and filling meals,” she said.

Emily discovered the free cooking classes offered a the CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center and decided to try one. What she found was more than a class; it was a weekly ritual of connection and care. Whether joining virtually or in person, Emily stepped into a space filled with encouragement, creativity, and community. “The classes helped provide a break from the stress and rigor of my academic program,” she shared. “They gave me an opportunity to engage in self-care while still feeling connected to others. Haley, Anita, and the rest of the team made every experience fun, educational, and welcoming.”

Making time wasn’t always easy. Between labs, projects, and exams, there was always something competing for her attention. But Emily chose to show up for herself. “Dedicating the time to a cooking class was challenging,” she admitted, “but as part of my values of balancing work and life commitments, along with physical, mental, and emotional health, I found it necessary and enjoyable to find the time to be with friends and celebrating good food!”

The impact has been lasting. Emily now feels more confident and capable in her own kitchen. She’s eating healthier, exploring new flavors, and building skills that support her long-term wellness. But perhaps the most meaningful transformation has been internal. “As someone who struggles with depression, making time to prepare high-quality and nutritious food can be a challenge,” she said honestly. “These classes made it easier to feel empowered and capable of taking care of myself. They also gave me a chance to socialize and build community through shared meals. That has made a real difference in my life.”

Emily learned that wellness doesn’t have to be complicated or perfect. The cooking classes made it easy to enjoy food, take care of herself, and connect with others along the way.
