For Andy Lalka from the Department of Orthopedics, movement has always played a role in his life, but after gaining some weight around the time of his wedding in 2023, he realized he needed to make a change. “I wasn’t feeling like myself,” he said. “I wanted to get back to a place where I had energy, felt confident, and could stick to a routine that worked for me.”
That shift started when he began exploring new ways to stay active at the CU Anschutz Fitness Center, eventually trying a cycling class that quickly became part of his weekly rhythm. What surprised him most wasn’t just the workout itself—it was how much he enjoyed it. The mix of structure, challenge, and variety kept him engaged in a way he hadn’t expected.
The people leading the class made a big difference, too. Each instructor brought something a little different to the room, creating an environment that felt welcoming, energizing, and fun. “Even when the playlist was the same, the experience never was,” Andy added.
One of the best parts? Sharing it with his wife. The class turned into a weekly date night—an hour carved out just for the two of them to relax and reconnect. “It’s turned into our regular date night and a great way to unwind and connect after long workdays,” Andy explained. That routine became something they both looked forward to.
With consistency and dedication, Andy reached his post-college weight in about four months, losing roughly 12 pounds. His cardio fitness improved dramatically, and the results went beyond the scale. “I no longer feel out of shape, my clothes fit really well, and I genuinely look forward to working out."
Today, his goal is simple: keep moving, keep having fun, and keep building a version of wellness he can sustain for the long run. “And hopefully,” he jokes, “avoid the dreaded dad bod while I'm at it."
