Erica Nordstrom had long struggled with obesity, and she knew it was affecting her health. But it wasn’t until her doctor diagnosed her with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), a condition where excessive fat accumulates in the liver, leading to inflammation and potential liver damage, that she felt a real sense of urgency to act. Her father had battled the same disease, and witnessing its impact on him deepened her resolve. That connection led her to the CU Medicine Weight Management Clinic at the CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center (AHWC). Erica was ready to make a lasting change. “I wanted to lose weight by learning a new way of life,” she says.

She began working with Dr. Victoria Lu, who guided her through lifestyle changes and helped her explore medication options to support her journey. “She’s very hands-on,” Erica says. “Regardless of whether it’s in our appointments or through messages, she always takes the time to answer all of my questions.” With Dr. Lu’s support, Erica found a medication that worked for her, completely changed her eating habits, and started a consistent exercise routine.

The path wasn’t without its challenges. Finding the right medication took time, and motivating herself to make lasting changes in her habits and activity level required determination. But once the pieces came together, Erica embraced the full lifestyle shift. “I was determined to put all the pieces of the puzzle together and find balance in my weight loss journey,” she says.

The results have been life changing. Erica has lost 92 pounds and gained energy she hadn’t felt in years. She’s building strength, developing a body she’s proud of, and accomplishing activities that used to feel impossible. “Although I wasn’t always obese, I now have a physique I’ve never had before because of the strengthening exercises I’ve been doing,” she says.

The benefits go beyond physical changes. Erica sleeps better, moves with greater ease, and can walk distances or climb stairs without getting winded. Perhaps most meaningful to her, her liver health is steadily improving, stating “my hepatologist believes it’s in full recovery.” Beyond health metrics, she’s rediscovered joy in cooking and exercising, activities that once felt like chores but are now a source of energy and satisfaction.

“This is the healthiest I’ve ever been,” Erica says. “It’s not just about the weight I’ve lost, it’s about feeling strong, capable, and in control of my health.”

Erica’s story highlights how taking ownership of your health can transform your everyday life. She’s regained strength, stamina, and the ability to enjoy things she once thought were out of reach, and she’s excited to continue building on that progress every day.
