Data says that 2020 was also a time of increased substance use in Colorado. "I worry about what's going to happen in five, eight, ten years from now with all these people [who] for the first time misused a substance this past year," said Robert Valuck, Director of the Center for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention at the University of Colorado.
“Our experience shows us that these clot reactions are very rare, and they can be treated,” said R. Todd Clark, MD, MBA, lead co-author and assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. “People can feel comfortable getting vaccinated with any of the authorized vaccines, including the J&J vaccine. Getting vaccinated is a critical step in combatting this pandemic so we can return to our normal lives.”
Holguin, who usually spends his days treating patients at UCHealth and teaching at the CU Anschutz School of Medicine, joined actress Carey Mulligan for a telehealth skit during the awards show. "If you asked me, 'would you ever see yourself in the Golden Globes?' Of course, never. It’s really quite a lot of fun," Holguin said. "They called me up and from one day to another, I was learning some lines, which I was a little bit nervous about because I don’t do this for a living."
Her sons, along with the University of Colorado College of Nursing, established a memorial nursing scholarship in her name and hope she will be inducted into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame.
“It was a very efficient way to vaccinate patients,” said Richard Zane, the chief innovation officer of UCHealth [and CU School of Medicine faculty]. “We received tremendous feedback from our patients about how smoothly it went and how happy they were with the experience.”
“University of Colorado Hospital is part of the nationwide network called the COVID-19 Prevention Network, which has sites that are available to enroll into multiple sequential vaccine studies,” said Dr. Thomas Campbell, UCHealth Chief Clinical Research Officer and an infectious disease physician at the CU School of Medicine.
Kevin Lyster patrols the Anschutz medical campus — the same hospital his son Cody was supposed to be transferred to for more treatment against COVID-19. He died before he could make it. There’s not a day that goes by that Cody isn’t on his dad’s mind. "Especially with Christmas coming up in just a few days, it’s going to be kind of hard not having him there and having the hugs and exchanging gifts," said Kevin Lyster.
Dr. Thomas Campbell, infectious disease physician for the CU School of Medicine: "Two health care workers who received the Pfizer COVID vaccine had severe allergic reactions ... Both of the individuals who had this reaction to the Pfizer vaccine had a past history of severe allergic reactions. In the UK, the medical authorities are advising people who have that type of past history, not to receive the vaccine."
