Yet banned substances such as the triclosan in this Dial soap still commonly appear on online product descriptions, researchers found after searching the National Drug Code Directory and the websites of major online retailers, including Amazon, Walmart, and Target. The health effects of antibacterial ingredients "are very poorly defined," said Chandler Rundle, MD, first author of the study, which was published in Dermatitis. Rundle is with the Department of Dermatology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora.

"Because the surface area is just so huge, even if there are weak interactions, things can be bound to the charcoal," says David Kroll, PhD, a professor in the department of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Colorado Denver. "Any drug that's taken at a relatively low dose, I could see these charcoal capsules having a deleterious effect."

"The 20.5% frequency of irregular menses in the TODAY girls who are at least 1 year post-menarche appears to be higher than in the general adolescent population, although reported prevalence of irregular menses in normal adolescents varies widely," noted lead author Megan Kelsey, MD, a pediatric endocrinologist from the University of Colorado, Aurora, in a press release by the Endocrine Society.

For pediatrics, Harvard again comes out on top, according to the magazine, followed by University of Pennsylvania at 2, University of Cincinnati in Ohio at 3, University of Colorado in Aurora at 4, and John Hopkins University at 5.

"This paper is the only comprehensive review of the major micronutrients supplements that affect behavioral outcomes from pregnancies," first author Robert Freedman, MD, from the Department of Psychiatry, University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora, told Medscape Medical News.
