In a bustling classroom at the University of Colorado College of Nursing at Anschutz Medical Campus, Domonic Esparza sits among his peers, far from the California beaches he once called home and even further from the business career he almost pursued. His journey from potential business heir to aspiring nurse represents more than just a career change—it's a testament to following one's true calling, even when it means charting an unexpected course.

The Weight of Legacy vs. Personal Calling

The son of a business owner, Esparza initially followed a path well-worn by family expectations.

"I switched to business because my dad owns a heavy hauling company," he explains.  "He wanted me to take over the business, but at the same time he encouraged me to do what I wanted."

During his junior year, an undeniable truth emerged: his heart belonged in healthcare. And after speaking to his father, they agreed that the right path was a nursing degree.

What makes Esparza's story remarkable isn't just the dramatic career pivot—it's the thoughtful way he orchestrated his transition. While completing his business degree, he simultaneously laid the groundwork for his future in nursing, completing prerequisites that would serve as his bridge to a new life.

A Tale of Two Coasts

Trading California's sunny shores for Colorado's medical excellence, Esparza found himself in CU Nursing's prestigious Accelerated (UCAN) BS in Nursing program.

"I just fell in love with Denver and how great CU Nursing's program is," he shares, though the decision meant temporarily leaving behind the coastal lifestyle he cherished.

The Heart of Healthcare

For Esparza, nursing represents more than just a career change—it's a calling that aligns with his deepest values.

"I've always wanted to pursue nursing because I have a strong desire to help others and contribute to the well-being of patients," he says. "Making a meaningful difference in people's lives, especially during vulnerable moments, is really fulfilling."

His focus on patient advocacy and family support reveals a deeper understanding of healthcare's human element.

"I want to make sure patients and their families receive the best care and education possible so they can make informed decisions," he explains, highlighting the comprehensive nature of modern nursing care.

Building Bridges Through Community

The intensity of nursing school brought unexpected lessons about the power of community. Esparza emphasizes the crucial role of peer support in navigating the program's challenges.

"Your cohort is going to help you get through the program," he advises future students, adding with conviction, "Remember that you belong here. There's a reason you were accepted into the UCAN program."

Coming Full Circle

In a fitting conclusion to his transformation, Esparza's next chapter will unfold in the trauma unit at UC San Diego Health, bringing him back to his California roots.

"I'm excited to go back home to California," he says, embodying the perfect blend of professional growth and personal authenticity. "I'm a beach boy and a typical California guy. I don't love the snow so I'm excited to go back to California, but I'm going to miss the friendships I've made here."

His journey from business student to trauma nurse illustrates a universal truth: sometimes the longest distance we travel isn't measured in miles, but in the courage it takes to follow our dreams. As Esparza prepares to don his scrubs in San Diego's trauma unit, he carries with him not just a nursing degree, but the wisdom that comes from choosing authenticity over expectation.
