Nurses and nursing students often find themselves working or studying at unusual hours — whether it's a night shift, late-night clinicals, or studying for exams. Because those late hours can pose additional safety concerns, the University of Colorado Anschutz College of Nursing wants to ensure you’re protected. That’s why we’ve put together some simple, important tips to help you stay safe and alert when you're out and about after dark.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings
Stay alert and avoid distractions when walking to your car or public transportation. Try not to text, talk on the phone, or wear headphones. Have your keys in your hand (or know where they are in your purse, pocket, or bag) so you’re not fumbling around trying to find them. Park in a well-lit area and immediately lock your car once you get inside it. And if possible, park next to a co-worker or classmate and walk together.
Share Your Schedule With The Right People
Let a trusted friend, co-worker, or family member know if you’re studying or working late, when you’re expected to get home (or arrive), or if your plans change. Even a short text saying “I’m home safe!” or “I’m at work or the library” is important. This lets someone know where you are so in case something happens, they can contact the police.
💡CU Anschutz Nursing Tip: While it’s important to let people know where you are, don’t let everyone know. Try to avoid posting your whereabouts on social media in real-time or share your location publicly.
Your Phone Can Help
It’s a good idea to make sure your phone is charged in case you have to dial 911 or other emergency numbers. And, keep emergency contacts in an easy-to-find spot in your contact list. You can also use your phone as a flashlight.
💡CU Anschutz Nursing Tip: Keep the CU Anschutz Police Department number in your phone for easy access: 303-724-4444.
Secure Your Belongings
According to the 2024 CU Anschutz Annual Security and Fire Safety report, there were 326 car theft reports between 2021 and 2023 on campus. Keep any valuables out of sight and hidden in your car to thwart potential thieves. It’s a good idea to keep a bag or purse close to you while walking to your car, so it’s not an easy target for someone to steal.
Trust Your Instincts
If something feels off, don’t ignore it! Call for help or move to a safer location. On the CU Anschutz Campus, there are blue light call stations in hospital parking lots, which connect you to a dispatch center or police.
💡 CU Nursing tip: Call the CU Anschutz Police Department for a free safety escort on campus when it’s dark.
