Matt Guerrieri, MD, assistant clinical professor of pediatrics, has been selected as the Poole Fellow for the inaugural 2024-25 year. The Advocacy and Health Equity Fellowship, sponsored by private funders and offered by the Department of Pediatrics at the CU School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital Colorado, aims to train pediatricians in community-based advocacy and promote health equity in primary care for underserved children. As a fellow, Guerrieri will enhance his practice and advocacy skills in pediatric integrated behavioral health and health-related social needs. He will also undertake a health equity project to transform his practice towards improving equity.
Guerrieri, a community pediatrician at Lowry Pediatrics in Denver, volunteers as clinical faculty at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He mentors pediatric residents and develops curricula on physician advocacy, health justice, climate health and general pediatrics. His advocacy efforts include legislative testimony, publishing opinion pieces, and leading civic actions to expand equitable healthcare access. He is currently involved with the Center for Health Progress and leads a Colorado Health Foundation grant focused on enhancing clinic-level health equity data utilization. His interests encompass integrated behavioral health services in primary care and immigrant and refugee health.
Before attending medical school at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and completing his pediatrics residency at the University of Colorado, where he served as chief resident, Guerrieri earned an undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering at Northwestern University. His commitment to addressing health injustices for children will significantly benefit his practice and community.
