Cardiology Nurse Practitioner, Rocky Mountain Regional VA
Coming from a family of nurses, Damon followed his calling by enlisting in the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. After 20 years of military service, he joined CU Nursing's Veterans and Military Health Care program, becoming part of its first DNP cohort.
Recently named Distinguished Graduate at the 2024 Alumni Association Awards, Damon finds fulfillment in serving fellow veterans. "Knowing I'm giving back to patients who sacrificed so much for our country gives me enormous pride," he shares.
Damon joined the board to "continue the legacy of excellence for CU alumni nurses and network with amazing clinicians." His advice to students? "Ask questions—you don't know what you don't know!"
Shelby Daniels, BSN ('16)

Healthcare Compliance Officer, Colorado Department of Health and Environment
Shelby's nursing journey began at age ten when she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. "The nurse educator who worked with me made such a profound impact through kindness and compassion that it inspired my future career," she explains.
As a Healthcare Compliance Officer, Shelby guides practice and drives meaningful change while ensuring regulatory compliance and patient safety. She joined the board to give back to the program that shaped her career and looks forward to "fostering a strong professional network and promoting excellence within the CU Nursing community."
Her advice emphasizes curiosity: "Stay open to learning at every stage. Nursing is dynamic and ever-evolving—the ability to adapt and ask questions will serve you well."
Christopher Craver, MSNA, CRNA (BSN'01)

Retired Nurse Anesthetist, formerly with Children's Hospital Colorado
Christopher found his calling after an ACL reconstruction at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center. "The nurses inspired me through their kind care and calm demeanor under pressure," he recalls.
His most memorable CU experience? Completing an OB clinical rotation on crutches after his third ACL surgery. "New moms looked at me funny when I gimped in saying, 'I'm here to help take care of you tonight!'"
After building on his CU foundation to become a nurse anesthetist, Christopher eventually retired due to a brain tumor. He joined the board to "support the CU nursing community through recognition of achievement and promoting the virtues of the College of Nursing."
His advice? "Take advantage of every opportunity. You never know which one will set your life on a wonderful path."

Children's Hospital Colorado Lifestyle Medicine Program Coordinator
Suzanne's nursing ambitions emerged remarkably early—in her kindergarten wishes! As Assistant Professor in Nutrition at the University of Colorado, she was drawn to CU Nursing for its reputation and location that helped her balance work, family, and education.
Through her studies, particularly her latest degree, Suzanne gained crucial leadership skills to implement healthcare changes. For her, nursing's greatest reward is "creating bonds with families and coworkers that bring lasting joy."
Joining the board allows her to give back to "a community that has provided me with quite a lot."
Her straightforward advice to students? "Enjoy the process! Open your mind to learning rather than stressing over grades. And think outside the box!"
