Viral N. Shah, MD, associate professor of medicine and pediatrics in the adult clinic of the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and lead author on the study, said the research was important because the number of people without diabetes using CGM has increased in recent years.
“We found that increased airway inflammation, demonstrated by higher concentrations of sputum proteases and cytokines, was associated with two important indicators of lung disease: impaired lung function and structural airway damage as determined by chest CT,” Scott D. Sagel, MD, PhD, professor of pediatrics-pulmonary medicine at University of Colorado School of Medicine, told Healio.
“There is wide variation in symptoms from woman to woman,” Nanette F. Santoro, MD, professor in the divisions of reproductive endocrinology and infertility and reproductive sciences in the department of obstetrics and gynecology and the E. Stewart Taylor Chair of OB/GYN at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Aurora, told Endocrine Today. “Some women report no hot flashes, but they are relatively few. There are also large differences in how much symptoms affect a woman’s quality of life.”
In an accompanying editorial by Meghan D. Althoff, MD, PhD, and Sunita Sharma, MD, MPH, of the division of pulmonary sciences and critical care medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, they wrote that more information on the functional genetic effects that lead to the associations found between asthma, atopic dermatitis and GERD are necessary.
“We would like to believe it is the effect on the MDSCs that is enhancing the efficacy of pembrolizumab in these patients,” researcher Martin D. McCarter, MD, professor of surgical oncology at University of Colorado School of Medicine, told Healio. “We demonstrate some supporting data to suggest this relationship but cannot prove for sure that was the mechanism. For example, it could have been patient selection in a relatively small study.”
In a quality improvement project, Hlavin and Maureen Varty, PhD, RN, a research nurse scientist at UCHealth and an assistant professor at University of Colorado College of Nursing, conducted an audit with 508 observations from August 2020 to October 2020 at UCHealth to see how often off-label placement of finger probes was occurring in critical care units.
“Hair loss, or alopecia, affects over 50% of men and 40% of women in their lifetime,” Melissa R. Laughter, MD, PhD, of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and colleagues wrote. “This topic currently has over 280,000 related posts on Instagram alone and may be vulnerable to the spread of misinformation by non-dermatologists.”
