“This 12-week study shows that fezolinetant is the first nonhormone treatment for hot flashes that has efficacy that is similar to hormone therapy,” Nanette Santoro, MD, the Professor and E. Stewart Taylor Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, told Healio. “It also appears that it helps with sleep. This is very good news for menopausal women who cannot or do not want to take hormones to treat this common menopausal symptom.”

“Halfway through my residency training program in internal medicine, I realized there was more to medicine than simply making a diagnosis and making people better,” Eckel, emeritus professor of medicine in the divisions of cardiology and endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, emeritus professor of physiology and biophysics and Charles A. Boettcher II Chair in Atherosclerosis at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, told Healio. “I became incredibly curious about disease mechanisms and why certain drug paradigms did not work. I felt the need to get some answers and research experience.”

“Rivaroxaban was clearly beneficial in patients with chronic kidney disease and was particularly effective at reducing the risk of limb events in patients — that is, acute limb ischemia and above-the-knee amputation,” Judith Hsia, MD, with the department of medicine at University of Colorado School of Medicine, told Healio.

“The Control-IQ system can significantly improve time in range between 70 mg/dL and 180 mg/dL, bringing it closer to the [American Diabetes Association] goal of 70%,” Laurel H. Messer, PhD, RN, assistant professor of pediatrics at the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine, told Healio. “This is a huge win for children and adolescents, who particularly struggle with glycemic control.”

Pediatric diabetes research is an area that hits close to home for Kristen Nadeau, MD, MS, professor of pediatric endocrinology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. A member of the Prairie Band of Potawatomi, Nadeau worked on two Native American reservations in medical school and observed a rising medical problem within the population.

Psychiatrists, as well as the overall mental health field, may play an important role in mitigating the effects of the trend toward increasing polarization, according to Steven Berkowitz, MD, professor in the department of psychiatry and pediatrics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, as well as director of the Stress, Trauma, Adversity Research and Treatment Center. Berkowitz spoke with Healio Psychiatry about the link between mental health and political unrest, how psychiatrists can approach treatment in an age of heightened division and whether psychiatrists can address radicalization at the ends of the political spectrum.

The ability to accurately and precisely predict the final menstrual period has long been a “holy grail” of menopause research, Nanette Santoro, MD, professor and E. However, menstrual bleeding patterns, serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels or previous anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) assays could predict the final menstrual period only within a window of 4 years, which is not clinically useful.

“Research has been going on for the last couple decades in telepsychiatry, and at this point there is a robust evidence base,” Jay H. Shore, MD, MPH, of the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, said during the session. “Now, there is a good cohort of randomized controlled studies, approximately 20 to 25, of good quality, that demonstrate interventions over video conferencing are equally as effective as interventions in-person or face-to-face.”
