Cardiologist Robert Eckel of the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora, who was also on the ACC/AHA committee, agrees. "I don't see apoB changing the playing field very much," he says.
The movie “Wonder”, tells the story of a young boy born with severe facial deformities. It hits close to home for a researcher at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine. Francis Smith, Ph.D. has the same rare disorder as the boy in the movie.
Other experts reiterate that point. “As a dermatologist, I see a lot of patients with misperceptions about different creams and procedures and the whole concept of facials,” says Dr. Joel Cohen, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Colorado and director of AboutSkin Dermatology and DermSurgery near Denver.
“It’s easier to avoid the conversation, which is rarely a brief one,” said Dr. Cari Levy, a professor at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. “Our systems are not designed to allow for meaningful conversations that may take some time.” Levy, a palliative-care physician who routinely discusses end-of-life questions with her patients, believes that confronting death can be empowering.
“(We are in) probably the most exciting time in cancer in the past 25 to 30 years,” said Dr. Dan Theodorescu, director of the University of Colorado Cancer Center. Cancer is a genetic disease of broken genes, which creates its own weaknesses. Theodorescu discusses current research in treatment involving smart drugs and other advanced therapies for cancer.
The study is based on “a sophisticated statistical analysis technique that relies on certain assumptions, and those assumptions can be challenged,” said Stephen Daniels, chairman of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. “But I think the assumptions are pretty reasonable and their conclusions are pretty reasonable and, unfortunately, pretty scary.” Daniels, who was not involved in the study, said the findings reflect “profound changes in physical activity and diet” that are hard to address.
The FRA plans to add to the Anschutz Medical Campus with a Bioscience Innovation Building, a 110,000-square foot, three story building. The FRA is currently negotiating with bioscience startup companies for 70-percent of the building. The campus currently supports 22,000 jobs but that could grow to 40,000 over the next 15 years. The FRA says the University of Colorado will likely expand its facilities. Rezoning efforts over the last couple of years allows for an additional 850 housing units to be built bringing the campus total to 1,450.
