"We performed a large dataset analysis and demonstrated that administering midazolam is associated with an increased risk of myocardial injury in non-cardiac surgery when surgeries occurred at night and in healthier patients," said the study's senior author Tobias Eckle, MD, Ph.D., professor of anesthesiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. "This is significant because these findings could have tremendous implications for patient mortality."

"Switching the clock is always a little bit of a disruption in the daily schedule and it definitely affects everyone differently," says Katherine Green, Medical Director, UCHealth Sleep Medicine Clinic, Anschutz Medical Campus. "The biggest impacts we see with daylight saving time in the fall and actually the impacts for some people last throughout all of daylight saving time have to do with that actual change in light exposure that we get."

Given that cases and the percentage of tests coming back positive have been trending up over the last two weeks, it appears that the rise in hospitalizations points to a real increase in infections, said Dr. Jon Samet, dean of the Colorado School of Public Health.

Kenneth Tyler, who studies EV-D68 pathogenesis, thinks something else is at play. Tyler, chair of the department of neurology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, said work his laboratory has been doing in baby mice that are susceptible to developing AFM shows that some strains of EV-D68 are more likely to trigger neurological damage than others.
